If I wanted to get a website up, should I consider WordPress as my first choice?

Are there any software houses that can help develop online community platform? I am looking for setup with a parent organization with subsidiaries with members. e.g a US soccer association platform with member teams with pages & members.

With WordPress you would have to install a bunch of plugins - which can cause very slow page load speeds, increase security risk, and may break your website functionalities when you have to upgrade - to get the same kind of features as with UltimateWB. What are the most important things to consider when setting up security for your website?
Keep your website builder/platform upgraded, have SSL on your web hosting, have strong passwords.
