What would you recommend for forum software between SMF and phpBB – or something else?
Between those 2, I would go with phpBB. But UltimateWB is a much better option - the built-in UltimateWB forum app has a lot of features, and more options for controlling spam. UltimateWB used to have an integrated built-in phpBB forum early on, but then it got switched out for this custom forum app to fix the spam issues and add more features to it.

UltimateWB has a built-in forum app. Besides letting admins/moderators to moderate topics/posts, it also allows the authors to edit their own topic posts/posts - but not the posts of others, even if it is for their topic.
