EmDash is getting attention as a new alternative to WordPress. Its creators describe it as a “spiritual successor to WordPress” built to rethink some of the problems that have accumulated around the traditional WordPress model. EmDash 1.0 was released in September 2026.
But if you’re considering EmDash because you’re frustrated with WordPress, there’s a bigger question to ask:
Does EmDash actually solve the problems you have with WordPress, or are you simply replacing one complicated website setup with another?
Let’s look at what EmDash changes, what it doesn’t, and how UltimateWB takes a different approach.
What Is EmDash?
EmDash is an open-source content management system designed to work with Astro.
The basic idea is that EmDash manages your content while Astro handles the website itself. Your website’s routes, layouts, HTML, styling and frontend are controlled by Astro, while EmDash provides the CMS and content management functionality.
EmDash is designed around a developer-and-editor workflow. It is not a visual page builder. Developers build the Astro website, while editors use EmDash to manage the content.
EmDash is therefore not a replacement for a visual website builder. It is a CMS that works with a separately built Astro website.
And some of the reasons for creating it are directly related to complaints people have about WordPress.
Does EmDash Solve the WordPress Plugin Problem?
It addresses part of it.
One of the biggest concerns with WordPress is its huge third-party plugin ecosystem. Plugins can add almost anything to a website, but they also introduce additional code that has to be maintained, updated and secured. We’ve covered specific examples of how WordPress plugins can create problems, including in our article, Why Relying on WordPress Plugins Can Backfire (And How to Avoid It).
EmDash uses sandboxing to limit what certain plugins can access.
Its sandboxed plugins can run with explicitly granted capabilities and restrictions on what they can access. EmDash also supports native plugins, which run as part of the host application and have greater access.
Does that eliminate plugin security risks? No.
EmDash still has plugins. Plugins can still contain vulnerabilities, still need to be updated, and native plugins have greater access to the host application. Sandboxing changes the way certain plugins are isolated, but it does not make third-party plugins risk-free.
EmDash also has a plugin registry, and plugins can still be installed and updated.
There is another WordPress plugin problem, too: why do you need third-party extensions for so much of your website’s functionality in the first place?
That’s where UltimateWB takes a different approach.
UltimateWB Doesn’t Build the Website Around a Plugin Ecosystem
UltimateWB has major website functions built directly into the platform.
Instead of starting with a basic website and then searching for separate extensions for memberships, forums, forms, e-commerce, listings, articles, social networking and other functionality, UltimateWB provides these as built-in website features and applications.
You can build a membership website, forum, social networking website, e-commerce website, classifieds or listings website, auction website, article website, or a combination of these, among many other types of websites.
You can also add forms and surveys, file uploads, rewards and points systems, photo galleries and other functionality.
But the benefit isn’t simply having a long list of built-in applications.
It makes everyday website building easier.
You don’t need a plugin just to create a contact form.
You don’t need a plugin just to handle basic SEO.
You don’t need a separate system to change the site’s overall design.
You can use the Styles Manager to make design changes, add pages when you need them, modify page formats, change navigation and continue expanding the website without assembling another collection of software.
You can start with a simple website and add more as the website grows.
The functionality is already there, and it is designed to work together.

Does EmDash Make Building a Website Easier?
The difference between a CMS that works with a separate frontend and a website builder with a built-in CMS is straightforward.
With EmDash, you are building an Astro website and using EmDash to manage its content.
With UltimateWB, you build and manage the website directly in the website builder, with the CMS and other website functionality built in.
You can create a page, change its format, add it to your navigation, change the site’s design, add a contact form, adjust SEO settings and add built-in functionality from the same platform.
You don’t have to choose a frontend framework and then find a CMS to go with it before you can start building the website.
You build the website directly.
That’s what a website builder should do.
Does EmDash Eliminate Website Maintenance?
It changes some WordPress-specific issues, but it doesn’t eliminate website maintenance.
Running an EmDash website involves the CMS, Astro application, database, media storage, backups and updates. Updating the application involves updating packages, building and deploying the application, with backups recommended before making changes.
That isn’t necessarily a problem if you are a developer building and operating an Astro website. It is simply part of the setup.
But if you are looking for a platform that handles more of the website-building process for you, there is a difference.
With UltimateWB, you aren’t separately building an Astro frontend and then connecting it to a CMS. The website builder, CMS, design tools and built-in applications are part of the same platform.

What About Customization and Code Access?
Not needing to code doesn’t mean you should be limited if you want to customize your website.
UltimateWB gives you both options.
You can build and manage your website without knowing how to code. But if you want to customize the website’s code, you can work with your website’s HTML in the page editor, CSS through the Styles Manager, and JavaScript, PHP and MySQL for further customization.
No coding is required, but you’re not locked out of your website’s code either.
You aren’t getting access to the source code of the UltimateWB software itself. You’re getting access to the code that makes up and controls your website.
What About Non-Developers?
This is one of the clearest differences between the two platforms.
EmDash is built around a developer-and-editor workflow. A developer builds the Astro website, and an editor manages its content.
UltimateWB lets a website owner build and manage the website without writing code.
You can add pages, change the design, modify navigation and add functionality as the website grows without having to rebuild the site around a different collection of tools.
For more on using UltimateWB as both a beginner and a developer, see The Powerful Website Builder for Beginners and Coders.
You don’t have to choose between easy and powerful.
What About AI?
EmDash 1.0 includes a built-in MCP server that allows AI assistants to work with site content. It can be used to create and edit content, manage media and search site content through the MCP connection.
But it doesn’t change what EmDash is.
EmDash is still a CMS for an Astro website. The website itself is still built with Astro.
UltimateWB doesn’t require a separate frontend framework to build the website in the first place.

Can You Move a WordPress Website to EmDash?
EmDash includes a WordPress migration tool.
It can import WordPress content and media and map items such as authors, collections, fields and menus. Depending on the export method, supported SEO information can also be imported.
So if you want to move WordPress content into an Astro-based CMS, EmDash provides a way to do that.
But moving the content isn’t the same thing as replacing the website-building process.
You still have an Astro website to build and maintain.
If your reason for leaving WordPress is that you want an easier way to build and manage the entire website, UltimateWB gives you the website builder, CMS and built-in functionality in one platform.
EmDash vs. UltimateWB
The two platforms serve different purposes.
| EmDash | UltimateWB | |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | CMS for Astro | Website builder + CMS |
| Visual website builder | No | Yes |
| Astro required | Yes | No |
| Developer customization | Yes | Yes |
| No coding required to build a website | Not its primary model | Yes |
| Website design | Built with Astro | Built in UltimateWB |
| Plugin system | Yes | Major functionality built in |
| Built-in website applications | CMS-focused | Extensive built-in website functionality |
| AI/MCP | Built in | Not required for website building |
| WordPress migration | Built in | Not the purpose of the platform |
| Deployment | Cloudflare Workers / Node.js | Self-host or UltimateWB Cloud |
| Software cost | Open source | One-time purchase available |
The biggest difference is what you are actually using to build the website.
EmDash provides the CMS for an Astro website. UltimateWB provides the website builder, CMS and major website functionality in one platform.
So, Does EmDash Solve WordPress’s Problems?
Not really.
EmDash changes how plugins can be isolated, provides an Astro-based CMS, supports WordPress migration and includes an MCP server for AI-assisted content management.
But it doesn’t eliminate plugins or the security and maintenance considerations that come with third-party code.
It also doesn’t turn Astro into a visual website builder.
If you specifically want an Astro-based CMS, EmDash is built for that.
But if you are looking beyond WordPress because you want an easier way to build and manage a website, the question isn’t simply which CMS to use.
It’s whether you want to build your website around a CMS and separate frontend, or use a platform that already brings the website builder, CMS, design tools and major website functionality together.
That is what UltimateWB does.
You build the website.
