Is a Neo Sites “Free” Domain and Website Really Free? The 1-Year Subscription Catch Exposed

Neo Sites website pricing - it's not really free

If you’ve been searching for a way to get your business online, you’ve likely seen the pitch from Neo Sites: “Free domain, free website, free email.” You might even have read it from users on Reddit, wrongly advising Neo Sites offers “Completely free website with free custom domain”. It sounds like the ultimate win for a startup on a budget. But it’s not – there is a catch.

In short, the website is “free” in the same way a toy in a cereal box is free – you have to buy the box (the email subscription) to get the “free” prize.

1. The “Free Domain” is a 1-Year Tease

Here is the part they don’t lead with in the big bold headlines: The domain is only free if you sign up for a 1-year subscription to their email hosting service.

  • The First-Year Trap: You get a complimentary domain for the first billing cycle. Once that year is up, you are on the hook for renewal fees.
  • The Extension Limitation: Often, that “free” domain isn’t a premium .com. Neo frequently pushes the .co.site extension. While it works, it doesn’t carry the same brand authority as a traditional TLD, and it’s essentially a way to keep you locked into their ecosystem.

How much is the 1-year subscription? It’s $1.99/month for the first year, paid yearly, minimum, and $2.49/month after the first year. But, the point is what you’re getting isn’t a company focused on websites, but on email.

2. You’re Buying Email, Not a Website Powerhouse

The biggest “catch” is that Neo is, first and foremost, an email growth suite. Their website builder is a “value-add” designed to keep you paying for their email seats.

  • One-Page Wonder: The free tier and even some paid tiers are often limited to a one-page website. While Neo markets a “Free AI Website,” their own FAQ admits it is a one-page website that is only free “as long as your Neo subscription is active.” If you want a real multi-page site, you’ll find yourself looking at their paid website builder plans that range from $3.59 to $11.99/month – if paid yearly.
  • SEO Roadblocks: For anyone serious about SEO, a one-pager can be extremely limiting. You can’t build a content-rich site, a blog, or a deep-linking strategy on a single page. If you want to grow, you’ll find yourself forced to upgrade to a much more expensive plan just to get basic multi-page functionality.

3. Ownership vs. “Renting”

When you build on Neo, you are building on rented land.

  • No Portability: Unlike a platform that gives you full control over your files and database, Neo is a closed system – i.e. a hosted platform. You cannot simply “export” your site and move it to another host if you’re unhappy.
  • The “Lego” Limitation: Their AI builder is great for a 5-minute setup, but it lacks the “Lego-block” flexibility that professional builders provide. If you want a specific custom feature – like an advanced member directory or specialized e-commerce – you’re out of luck with Neo Sites.

4. No Support for Content Creators

If you’re a parent-preneur or a content creator, here is the dealbreaker: Neo Sites currently does not support blogging. A blog is your #1 tool for organic traffic. By choosing a “free” site that forbids blogging, you might be invisible to search engines for anything other than your exact business name.

The Verdict: Don’t Settle for “Starter”

Neo Sites is a fine “digital business card” if you just need a professional email address and a landing page for 12 months. But if you want to own your brand, rank on Google, and have a site that grows as you do, the “free” domain isn’t worth the long-term limitations.

Build it right the first time. Choose a platform that gives you the freedom to scale without the “1-year catch.”
