If your WordPress site is currently down with the fatal error: Class ‘C_NextGen_Settings’ not found, as the saying goes, you are not alone.
Just a white screen, staring at you – not so much the “White Screen of Death” (WSoD) – you get a clue on what is causing it by the error message displayed:
Error thrown
Class ‘C_NextGen_Settings’ not found
On every single page. You cannot even login to your WordPress admin panel.
The formatting of the error message is great – H1 Header for the “Error thrown” – which means Google and other search engines will jump to index your website with this new title.
A quick Google search confirms this – and that there are so many websites experiencing this error now. Indexed with this error message – yikes for SEO. Some have fixed it and still are being indexed with the error message, and some have not been able to fix it yet:
Interestingly, there is also a forum post on the official WordPress forum on a similar issue with this plugin back in July 2023.
What is causing this error?
This error is a direct result of a breakdown within the NextGEN Gallery plugin ecosystem. It typically occurs when an update fails to complete properly or when the plugin’s “Settings” class fails to initialize due to a conflict with the server’s PHP environment. Because this is a Fatal Error, it stops your site from loading entirely, including blocking access to your admin dashboard as well.
Quick Fix: Restore Your Site in 3 Steps
Since this error often locks you out of the WordPress Admin dashboard, you will likely need to use FTP or your hosting File Manager (cPanel).
*Before doing anything, make sure to create/download a backup of your website and database, just in case
- Rename the Plugin Folder: Navigate to
/wp-content/plugins/. Rename thenextgen-galleryfolder tonextgen-gallery-broken. This “unplugs” the process causing the crash and should restore website access immediately. - Purge the Corrupted Files: Delete the renamed folder. Since your galleries are stored in the database and a separate
/wp-content/gallery/folder, you won’t lose your images. - Reinstall Clean: Go to Plugins > Add New in your WordPress dashboard, search for NextGEN Gallery. Download a fresh copy of NextGEN Gallery from the official repository and reactivate it. This usually re-registers the missing class and clears the error.
This should fix this error, this time.
If at some point, later, this does not solve your issue – it means you have an incompatibility between the plugin and the WordPress core, possibly by the WordPress core updating automatically. It can be that the gallery plugin is no longer compatible with your new WordPress updated website.

Why Does This Keep Happening to WordPress Sites?
This error highlights a major vulnerability in the WordPress ecosystem: Dependency Fragility.

When your business relies on a patchwork build of dozens of third-party plugins, your site is only as strong as the weakest update.
