Airports in the U.S. are rolling out a new wave of technology designed to speed up security and improve the traveler experience: biometric eGates. CLEAR, in partnership with the TSA, has launched a pilot program at major airports, including Atlanta (ATL), Washington D.C. (DCA), and Seattle (SEA).
What Are Biometric eGates?
Biometric eGates use facial recognition to verify a traveler’s identity. By scanning your face and matching it to your boarding pass and ID, these gates allow you to bypass traditional TSA lines. The process is fast – typically under six seconds – making security checkpoints smoother and more efficient.
Who Can Use Them?
Currently, eGates are available to CLEAR Plus members, who pay an annual fee of $209. Members can enjoy expedited security, and discounted rates are available for family members and TSA PreCheck participants.
Privacy and Security
CLEAR emphasizes that it does not store biometric images long-term and does not access TSA watchlists. All biometric data is deleted within 24 hours, and TSA maintains full oversight over security procedures.
Where and When
The pilot program is limited to select airports for now, but expansion is planned for up to 30 airports nationwide, ahead of major events like the 2026 World Cup.
The Big Picture
Biometric eGates represent a major step toward modernized, faster airport security. For travelers, this means shorter lines, less physical contact, and a smoother experience overall.
