Starting August 26, 2025 at 14:00 UTC, the registries behind a group of specialty domain extensions (TLDs) are raising their wholesale prices. Since registrars purchase domains from the registries, these increases flow through to the end customer. Kind of like Trump’s USA tariffs.
The good news: this doesn’t affect the classics like .com, .net, or .org. The change is focused on niche, premium-style domains such as .xyz, .beauty, .ceo, .lol, and others.
That means whether you’re registering, renewing, or transferring one of these specialty domains, the updated prices will apply industry-wide.
How You Can Save Before Prices Rise
You can’t stop the registries from raising prices, but you can take steps to save yourself money:
- Renew early – and for longer. If you already own one of the affected extensions, renew it now for up to 10 years at today’s rate. That way, you lock in the lower price before the change takes effect.
- Register before the deadline. Thinking about grabbing a new domain in one of these extensions? Buying before August 26 means you’ll pay less than you would later.
A little action now means avoiding higher costs later.
