What is the best platform, in your experience, for creating an eCommerce website? How about the free ones versus paid ones?

I have found the best platform to be UltimateWB. You get all the e-commerce features you need out-of-the-box and you don’t have to mess with any third party plugins. It’s very flexible and customizable, and very easy to use. And you get to choose to host with UltimateWB, or download the software and host on a server of your choice.

You can find open source e-commerce website builders that are free for the base, like WordPress, Magento, or Joomla. The good thing about these is that like UltimateWB you can download the software and use it on the server of your choice. With other paid software like Shopify or BigCommerce you don’t have that flexibility, and must use their servers. But with these open source platforms, you will need to search/install third party plugins to get the functionalities that you need for your e-commerce website. Some may not be free, and actually require recurring payments to use. You also have to be careful with possible increased security risks, slower page load speeds, and your website functionalities breaking after upgrading the platform (required for security) due to plugin incompatibilities.

Got a techy/website question? Whether it’s about UltimateWB or another website builder, web hosting, or other aspects of websites, just send in your question in the “Ask David!” form. We will email you when the answer is posted on the UltimateWB “Ask David!” section.
