We are excited to announce two brand-new, high-performance modern layouts for our integrated WordPress blog system coming natively to UltimateWB 9: the UWB Magazine Layout and the UWB Magazine Hero Layout!
UltimateWB gives you total freedom in how you publish content. Whether you prefer using our native Articles app, building visual collections with the Scrapbooks app, or leveraging our seamlessly integrated WordPress blog option, you have full control over your site’s publishing workflow.
If you do choose to use the WordPress integration, these new templates give your blog a clean, fully dynamic, editorial aesthetic – without relying on heavy third-party plugins or bloated page builders.
Both templates are included directly with the UltimateWB Full software package. While they will officially launch with the release of UltimateWB 9, any active UltimateWB Full license holder can request early access today – just send us a quick email, and we’ll get you set up right away!
What’s New in the WordPress Magazine Layouts?
We’ve already deployed the UWB Magazine Hero Layout live on our very own Blog homepage! Here is a breakdown of what makes these templates so powerful:
1. Smart Mobile UX: Top-Bar Navigation & Search
In traditional blog sidebars, search bars and key navigation links get pushed all the way down to the bottom of the page on mobile devices.
To fix this, we moved the search bar and the “Browse Latest Posts” navigation link directly into a dedicated Top Banner Bar. On mobile, tablet, and desktop screens alike, search functionality stays right where users expect it – at the very top of the page for immediate access.
2. Built-in Automated “Featured Post” Algorithm (Hero Layout)
The UWB Magazine Hero Layout automatically highlights a top article in a prominent, full-width Hero section above the category grid.
Instead of requiring you to manually sticky or update featured posts every week, the template utilizes an internal algorithm combining post recency and view counts to dynamically feature your most engaging content. It ensures your homepage always looks fresh, active, and relevant to incoming readers.
3. Native Card Architecture & Dynamic Image Fallbacks
Every article card is designed to be fully clickable, accessible, and visual-first:
- Featured Images: Uses responsive, lightweight picture elements optimized for loading speed.
- Inline Image Fallback: If a featured thumbnail isn’t set, the system automatically extracts and displays the primary image directly from the post body.
- Zero Layout Shift: Fully responsive CSS grid cards handle long titles and excerpts seamlessly across all viewport sizes.
How to Set Up the Magazine Layouts on Your Site
Setting up the Magazine Layouts for your integrated WordPress blog takes only a few minutes. Here is how to organize your content for the best visual presentation:
Step 1: Organize Your Category Hierarchy
The magazine layout displays your content organized by main sections.
- Go to Posts > Categories in your WordPress dashboard.
- Structure your site using up to 5 main Parent Categories. (5 main sections create the ideal grid balance on the homepage).
- Assign all other, more specific topics as Child Categories underneath those top 5 parents.
Example:
Parent Category: News & Updates
- Child Category: Industry Trends
- Child Category: Press Releases
Parent Category: Guides & Tutorials
- Child Category: Beginner Tips
- Child Category: Advanced Strategies
The template automatically pulls your parent categories into distinct homepage sections, displaying up to 3 of the latest articles per category, complete with clickable filter pills for each child subcategory!

Step 2: Create and Set Up Your Pages
You will need to create two pages in WordPress – one for your new Magazine Homepage and one for your chronological article feed.
- Create the Magazine Homepage:
- Go to Pages > Add New and title it “Blog” (or whatever you prefer for your main blog page).
- In the right-hand panel under Page Attributes > Template, select either:
- UWB Magazine Layout (Standard category grid view)
- UWB Magazine Hero Layout (Includes the top automated Featured Post section)
- Click Publish.
- Create the Latest Posts Page (Chronological Feed):
- Go to Pages > Add New and title it “Latest Posts” (or “Articles”).
- Leave the template set to Default.
- Click Publish. (This provides a fallback feed for readers who prefer browsing all articles in simple reverse-chronological order).
Step 3: Configure Your WordPress Reading Settings
Now, point WordPress to use your newly created pages.
- Navigate to Settings > Reading in your dashboard.
- Under Your homepage displays, select A static page.
- Set Homepage to your Blog page (the page with the UWB Magazine template assigned).
- Set Posts page to your Latest Posts page.
- Click Save Changes.
Step 4: Clean Up Your Sidebar
Because the UWB Magazine layouts move the search bar directly to the new Top Banner Bar, you no longer need the default search widget taking up space in your right-side column.
- Go to Appearance > Widgets in your WordPress dashboard.
- Locate the Search widget in your sidebar area and remove it for a cleaner look.
(Note: If you happen to see an error screen when trying to load your widgets area, check out our quick guide on How to Fix the WordPress “Critical Error” on the Widgets Page After a PHP Upgrade to get it resolved!)
And that’s it! Your UltimateWB integrated WordPress blog will now showcase the fresh, dynamic magazine layout – giving your readers an organized and engaging way to explore your content on any device.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What happens if a parent category has fewer than 3 posts?
The grid automatically adjusts! The template will display as many published posts as are available in that category (e.g., 1 or 2). Once you publish more articles under that parent, they will automatically fill in the remaining slots.
Can I change the number of parent categories shown on the homepage?
Yes. While 5 or fewer parent categories provide the cleanest design balance on standard screens, the template will pull all top-level parent categories you have created in WordPress that contain published posts.
Does the Featured Post algorithm exclude the featured post from appearing twice?
Yes! The query automatically excludes the featured article from the category grids below it, so your readers will never see duplicate post cards on the homepage.
Do I need to re-upload image thumbnails if my posts don’t have Featured Images?
No, you don’t have to. If a post doesn’t have a designated WordPress Featured Image set, the template’s dynamic fallback engine will automatically extract the first inline image from your post content to build the card display.
