A new user signed up as a new user and then tried the activation code get got emailed, and it only took him to the home page.  Then when he tried to login it said he needed to activate his membership.  I was with him when he did the register so we hit the resend activation link which it did.  He tried to activate with the new activation link bit still it didn't work. So I  manually did it from my dashboard. He was signing in from his smart phone.  Would this have any effect?
